Rare 1936 Grunow Tombstone Tube Radio Amsw Bands1936 grunow, model 654for your consideration is a prewar 1936 grunow am & shortwave tube radio, model 654. This model is quite hard to find any info on and is in excellent original condition and evne comes with the original one page(two sided)manual. Teh beautiful mahogany veneered cabinet is all original and in great condition with no veneer problems, chips, and only a little lacquer loss on top.
I would give the cabinet a solid 9 out of 10 and finding a 70+ year old radio in this kind of condition doesn't happen very often. It comes with two bands, am(bc) & sw, 3-way tone control, tuning, band switch, and on/off volume control. Has the original bakelite knobs(felt washers behind them), original grille cloth, and all labels still in pristine condition.
The electronics have been restored to excellent playing condition with a 12ft wire antenna included for better sw reception. (tubes & capacitors replaced as needed, two new dial bulbs which really makes the green & black dial scale look nice lit up, new felt pads for the bottom, full alignment done, & all moving parts lubricated. ) the chassis is super clean with all tube shields in place.
The large pristine(no damage) 8 field coil speaker really sounds nice especially with the 3-way tone knob giving ti plenty of rich bass, clear treble, or both. It measures a lareg 17tall x 15wide x 11 deep and is quite impressive in person. Grunow out of chicago were known for their high end, well built quality sets and htis hard to find model is clearly no exception. If you collect large tombstone radios or cathedrals that have not been refinished then this set would make a great addition. Thanks for looking & may god bless our troops serving around the globe. All detailed cleaning, polishing, & buffing is done by hand just the way i was taught by a professional polisher 25 years ago. On oct-22-08 at 132750 pdt, seller added the following information note i've added an extra pic showing a better view of the small area of lacquer loss on top. There's no water damage or rings just a few thin vertical area's of lacquer loss that are left of center. (no damage to veneer).
