Stromberg Carlson 225H Wood Tabletop Tube Radio 1937Up for bids is a nice clean wokring stromberg carlson model 225h tube type table radio. The wood cabinet is clean and in good overall condition. The cabinet is solid. The finish is the original, except for the wood piece at the very bottom front. This top layer of veneer was missing when i received the set. It is rpelaced and stained to match the trim. It looks ok now. The remainder of the wood is original. There are a few chips, but nothing too severe. There is a tiny wood patch on the top and two smaller wood patches on the side edges. None is too big or severe and they look ok. The top repair is visable in the photos. The finish also has some scratches and one tiny dent on the right side. None si too severe. I cleaned the cabient well and used a rub-on tung oil to restore the original lustre-the scratches are blended nicely and the cabinet loosk good. The original knobs were missing when i received the radio. The knobs provided are a 1930's vintage set and they too look good. Each is a wood setscerw type. Original knobs are available from on-line vendors-i do not have any of the original knobs for this set. The grill, grill cloth, dial and dial bezel are lal nice clean originals. The painted lettering, numerals and stromberg carlson logo on the dial glass are in good condition. The black laquer detailing in the grill area looks great. The radio plays well on all bands.
There is a short wire at the chassis rear to attach an external antenna. With about a 5 foot wire attached, the ste picks up stations night and day on all bands. I replaced the (5) electrolytic capacitors sa well as the original oil-in-paper fractional value capacitors with fresh, new yellow types. The tubes are all good, including the ballast tube. The set shows some wear, but ovearll it displays well. The three dial lamps light pu as well-they are not too bright. The ballast tube included is the closest one to the origianl type i have on hand here. The original aws missing. The proper ballast tube should provide the dial lamps with the 13 volts required by the three lamps. They too are available from on-line vendors. Bid on the unusual stromberg acrlson 225 h for your collection. These sets are not common. This one looks good and plasy well. It is pictured on paeg 197 of stein's first machine age book.
